Base Chap Price

$500-600

Base price is dependent on your hide choice. This price includes a plain set of yokes, side plates, belt, and all initial hardware. It includes standard fringe (less than 8”).

Measurements

Measurements should be taken with a tailor’s tape, not a fiberglass tape. Tape should be snug but not tight. You want the chap to fit comfortably with room to adjust. Make sure all measurements are as straight as possible. Have a second person help you if possible.

Leg measurements should be taken with a slightly bent knee.

  1. This is where the top of your yokes will sit, just below your belt loops, or where it would be most comfortable for you.

  2. This measurement is taken from under the belt loop on the center of your leg, straight down, to crotch level.

  3. This measurement is on your outside leg under the belt loop, straight down, to crotch level.

  4. At crotch level, this measurement is taken around your upper thigh.

  5. Eyeball this measurement about halfway between your knee and upper thigh measurement. This is your mid thigh measurement.

  6. Take this measurement about three finger-widths from the top of your kneecap. This is the lower thigh measurement.

  7. Your top to solid measurement begins where you start your rise measurement. Take is all the way down the center of your leg where you would prefer your chap body to stop. I would recommend between 3-4” from the knee. You can go longer, but there is less room for fringe. Any shorter is not recommended as the chap body won’t comfortably break over the knee.

Chap Body & Hides

The body of your chaps is largely dependent on the application you will be using the chaps and your personal preference. I am a purchaser of Hide House and will give links to what options are available.

Firm & Medium Temper

Firm & Medium Temper hides will be thicker and be less pliable over the leg. A firmer temper will do better on a set of working chinks rather than a set for daily or show riding. They’ll be able to handle more wear on a day-to-day basis.

Recommended Hide House Collections:

  • Mellowtan - Cowhide offered in a large variety of colors.

  • Oiltan - Cowhide offered in a selection of more natural color. Offers more water resistance.

  • Napa Excel - Smooth grain cowhide on the thicker side in more natural colors.

  • Tucson Bison - Bisonhide with some gorgeous, dark color selections.

  • Heavy Tucson Bison - Same as the previous, just heavier hides.

Soft Temper

Soft Temper hides are thinner and will have more pliability. Thinner means they may wear or tear easier, but they are also offered in more colors and patterns, making for a great show chap. They’re sure to get you looks in the show ring!

Recommended Hide House Collections:

  • Cheyenne - Beautiful, soft cowhide in a good variety of colors.

  • Garment Bison - For those looking for a lighter Bisonhide.

  • Genesis - Low weight, pigmented hides with a large variety of colors.

  • Glovetan - Heavier in the soft tempered cowhides with natural colors.

  • Motochap - Another full grain cowhide with lots of color options!

  • Roughman - A softer oiltan with a more distressed look.

Hair-On Hides

Hair-On Hides are going to be softer tempered hides, mostly for show. Hair-On has some of the most wear as hair will rub out of the hide with normal use, particularly on the insides of the legs where the saddle sits.

Hide House offers a good selection for hair-on cowhides. All hides will differ in some way from any pictures. They also offer acid-washed hides for those looking for a little shine!
